Last week at this time I was in Northern Ireland learning about the new job, new surroundings and new uses for words.
Here are the first entries into what I'm sure will be an ongoing American-Norn Iron (as the locals call their country) dictionary:
wee = small
dear = expensive
good fun = pleasant, enjoyable [as in "He's good fun."]
scheme = plan [as in "pension scheme," and it's not something nefarious]
remit (n.) = budget, allowance
fancy (v.) = to like [as in, "I fancy that make of car."]
diary = calendar [so you actually want people to look at it]
craic [Irish word, pronounced crack] = stuff, fun, news [a very multi-purpose word]
handbag = purse
purse = wallet
what's on = what's going on
get on with = get along with
brilliant = great, wonderful, awesome, nice [a very multi-purpose word]
