Still learning new words and phrases, and forgetting to write them down. I think I've learned some swears, too. You tell me.
Singing off the same hymn sheets = being on the same page
What's about ye = How are you? [usually heard as "Boutcha"]
That's me / you / us = I'm done / you're done / we're done. In the context of a business meeting, it signals the end. Usually preceded by the exclamation, "Right!"
Maths = math
Rubbish = (n.) trash or (adj.) poor. "As in, I'm rubbish at maths."
Swings and roundabouts = six of one, half a dozen of the other
Lovely = delicious, as in "That pudding was lovely." I usually think of lovely solely in terms of female physical beauty or grace, but sometimes a pudding is lovely.
Slap-bang = dead-on or dead-center. This is my new band name, if I ever start a band.
Get on with yourself = Get out of here, or something more, um, explicit?
Buggered = messed up, screwed up. Proper for formal company?
I have gotten into trouble in the past with my use of British slang. It all sounds pretty tame to me; then again, I worked in a newsroom for 10 years.
