One of the things I learned soon after moving here is that nearly everyone has a relative in Canada -- most usually a cousin in Toronto. I don't have that exact connection, but I do have a frequent Maple Leaf reader who will fill the bill, and he sent a marvelous idea this week:
A suggestion for more Van Morrison moments ... trace out on a map the route described in "Coney Island"** and go for a wee Saturday jaunt along the County Down coast.
Why not live out that fabulous song? Not only does it contribute to my resolution to wring the most out of our wee country, it features three of my favorite things: autumn, Strangford Lough, and herring.
This mention of course sent me to the wonderful "Avalon Sunset" album, which contains this song; it appears right after "Have I Told You Lately that I Love You," a masterwork that was later butchered by Rod Stewart [aka my most loathed recording artist].
"Coney Island" precedes "I'm Tired Joey Boy," with the immortal line about departing for "pastures not greener but meaner."
I hope I enjoy the eventual trip even half as much as listening to these songs. Thanks cousin!
