Last spring many of my friends and acquaintances raved about the 2008 Easter concert put on by Methodist College students. [Note to U.S. readers - this would be junior high and high school aged kids, not university age.] Maybe "raved" is understating it -- I truly heard about this performance for weeks.
After seeing the 2009 spring concert, I can understand why. I finagled a ticket from my friend SJT, whose children were among the cast of thousands. What a night!
The first half of the show featured a few selections from each music group, and all of them were very accomplished. The Chapel Choir brought me to tears with their rendition of Stainer's "For God So Loved the World." Unbeatable.
I could run down the entire program and use up all my superlatives, but I think I enjoyed the show not only because of its high quality but also because I loved seeing my friends' children as part of it. They are so wonderful, so accomplished, and I was really happy for them.
I was happy because I think it's so cool that they play the recorder and boran and have integrated into this amazing school. But I'm happy because I remember how great it was to be part of a musical community in my [much less prestigious] school. Being part of a big noise, with other kids who like music, was one of the highlights of that time in my life.
If you don't have a connection with Methody, you should start working on one now so you can get a ticket to the 2010 spring concert. You won't regret it.
